MNEMOSYN – FLAG-ERA Graphene Basic Research project

MNEMOSYN stands for « 2D MagNEtic meMOries: Scalable growth and hYbrid electrical operatioN ». It is 36-months-long FLAG-ERA Graphene Basic Research project.
MNEMOSYN will develop and optimize techniques to grow large-scale 2D magnets, co-integrated with strong spin-orbit coupling materials, graphene and 2D ferroelectrics in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. The main objective is to demonstrate a large power reduction for magnetization actuation by spin-orbit torques (SOT) and by multiferroic proximity effects. The consortium benefits from state-of-the-art molecular beam epitaxy equipment provided by three different partners (SPINTEC, ICN2, Max Planck Institute) to accelerate the study of various selected materials combinations in a concerted fashion. Experimental developments are supported and guided by first-principles calculations and large-scale simulations of SOT figures of merit, jointly carried out by three partner institutions (CINaM, ICN2, Ankara University).
The outcomes of the project will consist in establishing the best growth and integration conditions, the corresponding upper limit of SOT efficiency and the demonstration of 2D multiferroicity, targeting room-temperature operation and scalable fabrication of memory building blocks. The feasibility of further fab developments will be ascertained to achieve higher technology readiness levels.
SPINTEC coordinates the project, develops the epitaxial growth of 2D magnets and investigates SOT physics in van der Waals heterostructures.
