Tribute to Anatoly Vedyaev

Peter Grünberg

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Anatoly Vedyaev from Lomonosov Moscow State University. Our laboratory, SPINTEC — and previously the Nanostructure and Magnetism Laboratory — collaborated with Anatoly, his wife Natalia Ryzhanova, and later his nephew Nikita Strelkov for over 25 years (since 1992!).

Anatoly was an exceptional theorist in the field of spin transport. Together, we published around sixty scientific articles. The earliest focused on the theory and modeling of giant magnetoresistance. Over the years, Anatoly made numerous remarkable theoretical contributions at key stages in the evolution of spintronics: the quantum theory of giant and tunnel magnetoresistance, the interpretation of their angular dependence, the magnetoresistance of heterogeneous magnetic metal/insulator alloys, resonant tunneling with large magnetoresistance in magnetic triple-barrier systems, quantum modeling of spin-transfer torques, noise in lateral spin valves arising from spin accumulation fluctuations, etc…

Together with Natalia and Nikita, Anatoly formed a wonderfully complementary team. He developed the theoretical frameworks, Natalia — a gifted mathematician — solved the most intricate equations, and Nikita implemented the numerical codes and generated the plots for our publications. Two of our colleagues, Mairbek Chshiev and Daria Gusakova — both former PhD students of Anatoly — were also part of this collaborative effort.

Since 1992, Anatoly and his team visited us every year for stays of three to six months. It was always a great pleasure to welcome them, both for their scientific brilliance and their remarkable human qualities. Many of us had the privilege of working with Anatoly during these numerous visits.

We deeply share the sorrow of his family and colleagues.
